M1156, AM578 – fuzes with GPS guidance

Підривник з GPS наведенням m1156

Description

M1156 is an American Precision Guidance Kit (PGK), a high-explosive (HE) fuze designed to convert standard 155 mm unguided shells into guided munitions.

It is a combined fuze and global positioning system (GPS) guidance module used to improve the ballistic accuracy of the current arsenal of 155 mm field artillery projectiles. In-flight guidance is achieved by the placement of canards, which control the airflow around the projectile. During flight, the PGK uses GPS location information to adjust the position of the fins and the flight path of the projectile toward the target point.

The operational effectiveness of the PGK is significant for targets engaged by field artillery units. PGK fuzes have demonstrated sufficient accuracy and reliability, allowing gun artillery units to achieve satisfactory accuracy (less than 50 meters) when firing existing unguided 155 mm HE shells at medium and long ranges.

In test firings with M795 HE and M549A1 HE Rocket-Assisted Projectile (RAP) shells, the fuze showed an average accuracy of 13 meters.
