Fuzes M577 and M582
The fuze series M577 is the same as the M582 series fuze, except that it contains a different detonating composition and cap.
The M582 fuze is a mechanical time fuze with impact and remote action, used with: 155 mm HE projectiles, M107; M549/M549A1 HERA; and both as M110 Agentand WP Smoke.
The fuze contains a mechanical clockwork mechanism that can be set to function at any time from 2 to 200 seconds.
Technical specifications
- weight - 454 g;
- overall length - 12.7 cm;
- visible length - 7.62 cm;
- time setting: - from 2 to 200
Usage notes
Warnings:
The fuze is considered unfit for use if it has been outside its standard container for more than 30 days.
For the “impact action” setting to function, a minimum projectile velocity of 500 km/h before impact with an obstacle is required.
The fuze may fail to function, or may function on impact, if the time to burst set is less than that required to arm the fuze.
On the first round, reduce the time setting by 0.2 s; this guarantees an air burst. Then watch the dispersion pattern and adjust the burst height.
Keep in mind that if you reduce the time, the burst may fall short.
Fuze Setting
Setting the fuze:
The fuze is screwed into the fuze socket of the projectile and tightened with a wrench.
Setting for remote (time) action:
The fuze is set using the setting wrench or a flat screwdriver. The setting screw is located at the end face of the upper part of the fuze, and the time to be set is displayed on three dials through a window in the side. The dial closest to the top indicates hundreds of seconds or a triangle for setting the time. The second dial indicates tens of seconds, and the third dial shows seconds and tenths of a second.
If you need to reduce the burst time on a fuze already set to a longer time, turn it clockwise (the numbers on the scale decrease) to at least 1 second less than the required setting (for example 24.5 for 25.5). Then reverse the direction of rotation to counterclockwise and set the required value against the index line on the scale.
If it needs to be returned to the transport and storage position, carefully turn it clockwise until it stops turning between ◀ 93.5 and ◀ 95.5. Then stop and do not apply excess force. 199.9 seconds is the maximum; 200 is not a setting supported by the manufacturer. The instructions prohibit turning it to a position of more than 200 seconds or less than ◀ 93.5.
You cannot set the time while the ◀ symbol is displayed; the fuze will not work properly.
Setting for impact action:
If impact action (fragmentation action) is required (set the setting scale to the ◀ 98 position – contact action (point detonation, fragmentation).
