Fuze DM74 (DM74) – inductively set remote-action fuze

DM74  A German multipurpose fuze for high-explosive projectiles (HE), used as a proximity fuze with the ability to detonate at standoff heights of 3, 6 and 12 m; it can be used in impact (PD) and delayed-impact modes with 155 and 203 mm high-explosive fragmentation (HE) projectiles. The fuze can also be set to initiate at a specific point on the firing trajectory (air burst), which is done by setting the built-in timer from 2 to 199.9 s.

The main setting of this fuze is the standoff height, since this setting has the highest effectiveness. Impact and delayed-impact action are used as a backup if the fuze fails to function in the standoff-height or air-burst setting.

Technical specifications

Fuze type: standoff height, air burst, high-explosive fragmentation action.
- main purpose: standoff height;
- standoff height: 3, 6, 12 m;
- air-burst time setting: 2 to 199.9 s;
- delayed-impact burst 0.01 s;
- length: 151.1 mm;
- weight: 395 g.

The fuze is set using the inductive setter, and manually to select impact or delayed-impact action.

Fuze Setting

Setting the DM74 fuze:

The fuze is set by the gun itself, if one is built in, or with the DM10 programmer (a general-purpose inductive setter). The setting allows you to set the burst height (3, 6, 12 m) above the target. By default the fuze is set to a burst height of 12 m.

To set the fuze to impact or delayed-impact action, use the programmer to set a time on the built-in timer that is greater than the projectile's time of flight.

To set the fuze to the “air burst” initiation, use the programmer to set a time on the built-in timer that corresponds to the required position of the projectile on the firing trajectory.

Manual setting allows you to select impact or delayed-impact (10 ms) initiation. To do this, move the plunger located on the fuze body (using a special wrench or a flat screwdriver) to the AZ or ANNZ position respectively.

If the fuze fails to function in the “standoff height” or “air burst” settings, it is initiated after meeting an obstacle (impact or delayed impact, depending on the plunger position).
