M8611A1 fuze

M8611A1 (M8611) – inductive remote-action fuze

Fuze M8611A1 is a high-explosive fragmentation (HE) electronic time fuze (ETF) developed in the Republic of South Africa. It is equipped with a point-detonating super-quick (PDSQ) impact backup and is designed to ensure maximum effectiveness against targets.

Key characteristics:

  • Fuze type: electronic time fuze (ETF) with a point-detonating super-quick (PDSQ) impact backup function.
  • Purpose: used for 155 mm artillery projectiles, specially designed for high-accuracy fire and for engaging various types of targets.
  • Compatibility: the JBMoU standard, which allows use with various artillery systems.

The fuze is suitable for use with artillery systems with barrel lengths of 39, 45 and 52 calibers.
It is also suitable for use with 120 mm rifled mortars and ensures functioning of projectiles on all charges, including the lowest charge.

Design features:

  1. M125A2 activation device:
    • Ensures the fuze is activated at a distance of 50 m from the gun after firing.
    • Guarantees a safe period before activation.
  2. Electronic arming delay:
    • An additional level of safety that minimizes the risk of accidental functioning until the required distance is reached.
  3. Time setting:
    • Setting range: from 4 to 199.9 seconds in steps of 1 second.
    • Provides flexibility in choosing the exact burst time.
  4. Program duration:
    • Minimum operating time: 30 minutes after activation.
  5. Backup function:
    • PDSQ (Point-Detonating Super-Quick): ensures instantaneous functioning if the main function fails.
    • The backup battery is activated only after the projectile's rotation and acceleration occur.

Technical specifications

  • Maximum range of action: matches the parameters of 155 mm caliber projectiles.
  • Length: 151.45 mm
  • Diameter: 61.25 mm
  • Setting range: from 4 to 199.9 seconds in steps of 1 second.
  • Temperature range: from -40°C to +60°C.
  • Programming time: up to 30 minutes after activation. The M125A2 activation device ensures a safe distance of 50 m from the gun.
  • Waterproofing: withstands high humidity and rain.

Usage notes

  • Resistance to vibration and mechanical impacts during transport.
  • Versatility: compatible with most artillery platforms.
  • Increased safety for the crew thanks to the multi-level activation system.

Fuze Setting

Setting the fuze:

The M8611A1 fuze is set by the gun itself, if one is built in, or with the DM10 programmer (a general-purpose inductive setter). The fuze setting is stored for 30 minutes after being made, but it can be reprogrammed at any time before firing.

If the inductive setting fails, the fuze will function as PDSQ (Point-Detonating Super-Quick) – instantaneous detonation on reaching an obstacle.
