PPD440 fuze

PD440 – proximity fuze. Time fuze

PPD-440 – a Norwegian high-explosive fragmentation (HE) multipurpose fuze used as a proximity fuze with the ability to detonate on impact, or it can be used for impact action only with 155 and 203 mm projectiles.

Key features of the PPD-440:

  1. Multipurpose use:
    • The PPD-440 can function as a proximity-activated fuze or as a classic impact fuze.
    • It is used with various munitions, mainly medium- and large-caliber projectiles (155 mm and 203 mm).
  2. Proximity functioning:
    • In proximity mode, the PPD-440 uses a radar sensor that functions on reaching a certain height above the target (usually about 10 meters).
    • The fuze's electronic system analyzes the signals to precisely determine the moment when the projectile passes over the target.
  3. Backup impact mode:
    • If proximity functioning does not occur for any reason, the backup impact mode is activated. This is important for reliable operation of the fuze in combat conditions.
    • In impact mode, the fuze is activated directly on contact with the target.
  4. Power supply:
    • The PPD-440 does not use batteries to power its electronic systems. Instead, it is equipped with a built-in generator that obtains energy during the projectile's flight.
    • The generator works thanks to a propeller located in an air intake at the tip of the fuze. The propeller is rotated by the oncoming airflow during the projectile's flight, which generates the required electrical power.

Fuze Setting

Setting the fuze:

To set the fuze to proximity mode (remote action), remove the black protective cap from the fuze. The projectile will then burst at a height of 10 meters above the target.

Fuze setting: Before firing, one of two operating modes of the fuze can be selected: proximity or impact. For this, a special cap is placed on the fuze tip, which switches the fuze to impact mode.

Application: The PPD-440 fuze is used both on the battlefield and to suppress targets behind cover. Its versatility allows effective engagement of both enemy personnel and equipment.
