Impact Fuze M557
Fuze M557 is a mechanical fuze designed for use in artillery projectiles and mortar bombs. It is widely used with 155 mm high-explosive fragmentation projectiles. The M557 has an instantaneous-action function that destroys targets on direct impact and can also operate with a delay.
Key characteristics:
- Type: Mechanical impact fuze.
- Caliber: Suitable for 155 mm projectiles.
- Functioning: Instantaneous or delayed.
- Operating range: Can operate in a variety of conditions, including wet and harsh environments.
- Dimensions: Compact, which allows it to be used in a variety of munitions.
Principle of operation:
- Impact mechanism: The fuze is activated when it strikes the target. The impact mechanism sets off the detonator.
- Delay: If the delay mode (0.05 s) is selected, the fuze can function a set interval after impact, which allows it to be used to penetrate shelters or to engage covered targets.
Application: The M557 fuze is widely used in modern artillery to improve the effectiveness of munitions against targets. It is suitable for high-explosive fragmentation projectiles and other types of munitions that require high accuracy and reliable functioning.
Advantages:
- Relative reliability and stable functioning.
- Can be set to different functioning modes.
- Ability to operate in difficult conditions.
Conclusion
The M557 impact fuze is an important component of modern artillery that ensures effective engagement of targets. Its mechanical design and adjustability make it a versatile solution for various combat situations.

Usage notes
Warnings:
Heavy rain may cause premature functioning of the fuze during firing.
Firing at low barrel elevation angles with the fuze
set to DELAY may result in a dud projectile.
Firing at mortar angles (sight setting above 750) may result in a dud projectile.
Storage in a damp place (dugout) causes the fuze to get wet and will result in duds. Fuzes that have already got wet can be dried and returned to working condition.
Fuze Setting
The fuze is screwed into the fuze socket of the projectile and tightened
with a wrench. To set the fuze:
- for impact action, use the wrench
or a flat screwdriver to turn the plunger slot to the “SQ” position. (the position SQ – Super Quick) is
the default position. Check that the fuze indicator
points to SQ);
- for impact action with delay: turn the plunger slot
with the wrench or a flat screwdriver to the “DELAY” position.
