M864 BB DPICM — extended-range cargo projectile

Extended-range projectile M864 (BB) with a base-bleed generator in the base of the munition. Used to engage personnel and lightly armored vehicles with dual-purpose grenades, at a range exceeding the capabilities of the standard projectile M483A1.

After firing, the base-bleed generator functions and creates a low-pressure zone at the rear of the projectile, thereby increasing flight range.

Loaded with 72 submunitions: 48 pcs - M42 and 24 pcs - M46.

Fragmentation submunitions with a shaped-charge effect. The M46 differs from the M42 in having a thicker body.

After firing, at a set time the fuze functions and sets off the expelling charge. Centrifugal force scatters the grenades radially from the projectile's line of flight.

The impact elements function after contact with a surface.

Usage notes

- Described in Kropyva for M777 systems.

Does not function on impact.

There are cases of barrel bursts when using M119A1 propellant (zone 8) from manufacturer LOT 37-AMB-23 (this is not a standard NATO-classification LOT). Here in detail about NATO LOTs

For the first round, it is recommended to reduce the fuze setting by 0.2 s. The ideal functioning height of the expelling charge is about 300 m; the characteristic white dots of the bursts are then visible from the drone. Analyze and experiment with the functioning time (burst height).

There is experience of engaging an enemy infantry fighting vehicle - the engine caught fire.

Do not use against dugouts, heavy armored vehicles, or targets such as "a tractor hidden behind a tree line".
