DM702 SMArt 155 — projectile with terminally guided submunitions

DM702 SMArt 155 is a 155 mm projectile carrying two terminally guided submunitions for engaging armored targets at medium ranges. After the expelling charge functions, the two self-guided submunitions are ejected by centrifugal force.

The submunitions deploy their stabilizers, an infrared target-search sensor extends and the battery is activated, starting the electronics.

At the same time three sensors — an active radar that also serves as a rangefinder, a passive radar and an infrared sensor — are activated and begin searching for a target.
The search is conducted at altitudes from 200 to 20 meters. When a target is detected, the aim point is calculated and a shaped charge with a tantalum liner is fired at the target, forming an explosively formed penetrator capable of piercing 120 mm of armor. If there is no target within the submunition's range, the projectile self-destructs. There are two independent and redundant mechanisms for this.

The first detonates the submunition, regardless of target detection, when it descends below twenty meters. If this self-destruct mechanism fails, the second one engages, which is triggered when the battery charge runs out.

Usage notes

External ballistics are the same as for the M483 projectile and DM642

Range table for different charges (M109 gun):

M3A1 charge 1 – 3,640 m
M3A1 charge 2 – 4,570 m
M3A1 charge 3 – 5,590 m
M3A1 charge 4 – 7,080 m
M3A1 charge 5 – 9,050 m
M4A2 charge 3 – 6,490 m
M4A2 charge 4 – 7,720 m
M4A2 charge 5 – 9,420 m
M4A2 charge 6 – 11,730 m
M4A2 charge 7 – 14,320 m

Four yellow weight marks in Kropyva is the "norm"

Does not function on impact

– For the first round, it is recommended to reduce the fuze setting by 0.2 s. The ideal functioning height of the expelling charge is about 200 m.
