SMOKE BE, M116, M116B1, M116A1 HC, COLORED — smoke projectile
These projectiles are used with the 155 mm howitzer to create a smoke screen and for observation.
Structurally, the projectile is a steel shell containing four canisters of chemical smoke composition.
The shell filler may
be hexachloroethane-zinc (HC) or
a green, red or yellow smoke composition.
The canisters are cone-shaped and follow the curvature of the projectile. A black powder expelling charge is located in the nose. For transport, a plug is placed in the fuze cavity.
After the burst, a smoke cloud forms within 30 s. Smoke generation ends after 60 s.
The expelling charge in the M116B1 model
is contained in a polyethylene cup. In addition, the copper closure disc used in the Ml16 model was
replaced with a steel disc in the newer model.
The ballistics and configuration are the same as for the high-explosive (HE) projectile M107.
